Unit topic: "What makes a hero heroic?"

Subject: English 1/ESOL
Idea: Examine what qualities a hero needs to be considered heroic. Are the requirements different for mythological figures and real-life people? What defines a hero?
Other ideas: 1) How did Will do it? Themes from Shakespearean works are relevant today. 2) Writing one moment at a time. 3) "Oh, The Places You Will Go" Dr. Suess's Career Advice. 4) Connecting to Literature: Why are we reading this stupid book?

Explanation of Topic: Derivatives can be extremely time consuming to calculate, but once a simpler method is PROVEN for all possible values of X, we can then manipulate functions using the simpler method. What are these methods? How are they Proven? How do these new methods really save us time? WHEN WILL I EVER USE THIS STUFF OUTSIDE OF THIS CLASS?!?!?!

I am planning a unit on a novel called THE OUTSIDERS. I teach 7th & 8th grade Basic Reading at McDonald MS. This is a story about conflict between two "gangs", the soc.'s (the haves) and the greasers (the have nots).
